The Engchoon Kuala Lumpur History Gallery
Liang Piyun, born in 1907 in Penglai Lane, Wufeng Town, Engchoon County, was the inaugural principal of Kuala Lumpur Chung Hwa High School. Originally named Long Guang and also known as Xueyu, he graduated from the Literature Department of Shanghai University in his early years. Later, he studied agricultural economics at Waseda University in Japan. He arrived in Malaya in 1934 and initially taught at Confucian School, concurrently serving as the editor-in-chief of Yiqun Newspaper in 1935.
In 1939, amidst the Fujian-Guangdong conflict at Confucian School, Liang Piyun, along with Kuala Lumpur community leaders and directors, initiated the establishment of the high school section of Chung Hwa School, where he served as its first principal and also contributed in writing the school song.
Liang Piyun’s younger brother, Liang Lingguang, also came to Malaya to teach with him initially, but later returned to China to participate in the resistance against the Japanese during the War of Resistance, and subsequently served as the Governor of Guangdong Province after the reform and opening up period.
In addition to inscribing plaques for the Eng Choon Hoey Kuan, Liang Piyun also penned couplets composed by Lim Lian Geok.
